    About Cyprus

Cyprus is a modern EU member island country in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, east of Greece and south of Turkey. Even though its geographic location is part of West Asia, its cultural ties and geopolitics are dominantly Southeast European.

Cyprus has two separate states- Northern Cyprus (Turkish Cyprus), which covers a third of the island, and Southern Cyprus (Greek Cyprus), which consists of two-thirds of the island. Northern Cyprus is recognized as a sovereign state only by Turkey, and its official language is Turkish, and its national currency is Turkish Lira. Southern Cyprus is an EU member state adopting the euro as its national currency. The text on this page is about the Greek Cyprus. To learn more about Northern (Turkish) Cyprus, see Northern Cyprus.

While Cyprus is a member of the European Union (EU), it is not a Schengen member state. As of November 2024, travelers holding Schengen visas can enter Cyprus, but Cyprus can not issue a Schengen visa, so one with a Cyprus visa is not allowed to travel freely across Schengen states.
